MALIBU SURF GATE
SURF TECHNOLOGY
Malibu's patent-pending Surf Gate® delivers a better quality wave than any other surf system on the water. Built for watersports enthusiasts who demand the best wake in every condition, the Surf Gate® system creates endless possibilities for riders of every skill level.
Surf Gate® is Malibu's patented wakesurf technology that reshapes the wake by delaying water convergence, rather than forcing the boat to lean or rely on lift-based trim tabs. Two precision-engineered gates are mounted on the transom. When one gate deploys, it redirects and delays water flow on that side, allowing the opposite wave to grow taller, longer, and cleaner with a massive surf pocket and endless push.

PERFECT SURF WAVE
Surf Gate® shapes the wave by managing water — not by lifting the boat out of it.
COMPARISON
Trim tabs lift and lean the boat to shape the wave. Surf Gate redirects water without disrupting the boat's balance. Here's the difference in how each works — and why it matters.
TRIM TABS
Trim tabs work by pushing down and lifting the boat up out of the water to tilt it. The higher the boat sits, the less water it displaces — which directly produces a smaller, shorter wave. The tilted angle also means a wobbly ride feel and extra engine load.
SURF GATE®
Surf Gate's transom-mounted gates redirect water flow instead of lifting the boat. The boat stays level and planing naturally — producing a taller, cleaner, and dramatically longer wave. Instant side-to-side switching with no disruption to the ride.
THE PROBLEM WITH TRIM TABS
Traditional trim tabs were originally designed to help boats plane faster, level side-to-side, and improve cruising efficiency — not to create surf waves. When these tabs are used for wakesurfing, they often work against the physics that are required to build a great surf wave.
When a trim tab is deployed, it rolls the boat to one side & water pressure hits the bottom surface of the tab and pushes upward. This creates hydrodynamic lift at the stern of the boat, raising the back of the hull higher in the water. While this lift can be useful for cruising, it becomes a problem when surfing.
Wakesurfing relies on ballast weight to push the boat deeper into the water, especially at the stern. The deeper the hull sits, the more water it displaces and the bigger, longer, and more powerful the surf wave becomes. Trim tabs do the opposite of what you need.
THE SURF GATE SOLUTION
This is why Surf Gate is focused on controlling water flow at the sides of the boat, delaying water convergence, controlling the current and shaping the wave without creating upward lift. By working with ballast, not against it, these systems allow the hull to stay deep in the water, maximizing displacement and producing a more powerful, ocean style surf wave.
Pair this with a hydro foil such as Malibu's Power Wedge III adding 1,500 lbs of simulated ballast instantly & you have the most customizable & best perform wakes & waves on the planet!
SEE THE SURF GATE FIRST HAND
Hydraulic surf system mounted to the transom that displaces water and lifts the stern — creating a taller, longer wave without needing to overload with ballast.
Three integrated ballast tanks sink the boat to shape the perfect wake, while the wireless Surf Band wristband lets the rider control Surf Gate, speed, and music from the water.
